Over recent years a number of seemingly conflicting trends have emerged from the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemical industries. One particular trend that CambridgeSoft has observed is the movement away from custom solutions and towards commercial "off the shelf" software. This movement has been accompanied by a drive towards integration of disparate enterprise software and other chemical and biological informatics solutions. The trend away from custom software has clearly been driven by the ongoing cost of maintenance and general upkeep. Companies in the business of drug development or chemical manufacture are now hesitant to also become experts in software development and maintenance as well, preferring instead to focus on their core competency and reduce costs wherever possible.
