Chemistry Departments Move from Paper to E-Notebook
Company:
Organon
For over ten years there has been a desire within the chemistry departments of Organon to introduce an electronic system to record chemical experiments and reactions. However, until a few years ago, the general consensus was that the technology was not mature enough to support the necessary requirements. In 2003, Organon felt the technology had advanced significantly and decided to investigate the option of introducing a commercial ELN for chemistry. The main factors driving this decision were:
Knowledge Management
- To capture information on chemical reactions (synthetic routes, successes, failures) in a format amenable to future retrieval and allowing utilization of this information for future experiment design.
Improve Efficiency
- Prevent duplication of effort such that chemists no longer have to do the administration in a paper journal AND copy part of the information into an electronic system. Remove the logistic work needed for paper lab notebooks, like making photocopies or microfiches.
- Automate laborious .....
